Short biography:

As an ethnologist, adult educator and certified writing trainer (Technical University Darmstadt) I have over 35 years of teaching experience at universities and academies in Germany and abroad.

In addition, I was executive director of the Museum of World Cultures in Frankfurt am Main for over eight years.

Since 2009, I have been conducting regular individual consultations and workshops on the topic of "Creative Writing and Academic Thinking" at various universities and academies.

The production of texts are everyday tasks. A major challenge is the translation of ideas and concepts into easily readable texts and oral presentations. Authors (scientists) are confronted with the claim to recognize essential aspects and to translate these into a comprehensible logic linguistically to be so clearly formulated that the texts are read, heard and understood with pleasure.

My method of creative writing initially works with an open and associative mode of expres- sion in order to activate the creative potential of the participants.

In order to facilitate the entry into creative writing processes, I work with objects – connected with corresponding questions or with self-chosen topics. The Associations collected while looking at things are then structured and put into a logical sequence to finally present them as text in the group.

In the workshop, participants will learn about differences in idea generation and organization techniques, text production, and working in a team with professional feedback.

The aim of the workshop is to identify individual problems in scientific writing, to strengthen the participants' confidence in their own existing skills and, through the writing techniques practiced in the sessions, to overcome their fear of a blank sheet of paper.

In addition, the work on ideas and texts (alone, in small groups or in plenary) among the par- ticipants enhances teamwork and thus basic techniques of scientific work are discussed and practiced in the workshop.

Handouts with brief overviews of individual techniques give the participants the opportunity to memorize the acquired skills after the workshop and to apply them in their everyday work (studies and professional practice).

Key points for the digital ZOOM workshop:

Conditions and Methods: Working with ZOOM

  1. To participate in the workshop you need a laptop/PC, a video camera and a good microphone

  2. In the run-up to the workshop, you will receive a list of the relevant documents so that you can read them before or during the workshop.

  3. In the Main Room we work in a virtual seating circle. Each of you has a fixed right and left neighbour, who will not change throughout the workshop. I will send you a graphic in the ZOOM chat, from which you can see your respective sitting position and all names in the circle.

  4. In the Main Room we work together as a large group or individually with individual writing tasks. In Breakout Rooms (ZOOM program) you will work in small groups of between three and four people, depending on the number of participants.

  5. For the small group work in the Breakout Rooms you will receive very specific tasks, which will be discussed beforehand in the Main Room and about which you can ask me questions at any time if you do not understand.

  6. In order for the group of participants to get to know each other better, the composition of the individual small groups is varied. This also encourages your openness towards creative processes and takes away the fear of them. Everyone is in the ‘same boat’ and wants to learn and practice.

  7. An important prerequisite for all exercises is your willingness to ask questions if you have not understood something and to actively work on the tasks alone or in a small group. This requires your ability to work actively in a team and a willingness to answer personal questions.

  8. Not everything you discuss in the small groups in the Breakout Rooms will later be communicated to the whole group in the Main Room. You decide yourself what you want to publish and what not.

  9. How many of the exercises given in the program can be covered depends on the way the group works. If we finish earlier than 

      planned on the first day, I can also bring forward an exercise from the second day, or the other way around, an exercise from

      the first day can be moved to the second and another one is then omitted. We will discuss these changes together.
